　玉川大学出版部は1929年（昭和4年）、玉川学園の創設と同時に「玉川学園出版部」として発足した。その前身は大正12年（1923）設立のイデア書院に遡ることができ、現在の名称、玉川大学出版部となったのは1947年の旧制玉川大学の発足時である。
　イデア書院時代は、玉川学園の創立者で「全人教育」の提唱者である小原國芳の著作を中心に出版をしていた。学園創設後は新教育運動や欧米の最新の教育思想を紹介する書籍を刊行するとともに「全人教育」の普及を担う活動も展開した。
　日本で始めて子ども向けの百科事典『児童百科大辞典』（全30巻）を刊行したのは1932年。夢の教育と理想の学園建設のためには体系的な百科事典が不可欠であると考えた小原國芳の発案によるものだった。この流れは、戦後の『学習大辞典』（全32巻）『玉川児童百科大辞典』（全30巻）『玉川大百科辞典』（全31巻）の刊行を開始し、昭和29年には、玉川学園と誠文堂新光社とで百科辞典編纂の事業提携が行われ、『玉川こども百科』（全100巻）、『玉川百科大辞典』（全31巻）、『玉川児童百科大辞典』（全21巻）『玉川新百科』（全10巻）『玉川こども・きょういく百科』（全31巻）『玉川百科　こども博物誌』（全12巻）につながるものである。
　1965年ごろからは『世界教育宝典』『教育の名著』『日本新教育百年史』『玉川学校劇集』をはじめとする教育の研究・専門書や音楽・演劇・体育を含む教育実践書を刊行。1974年には教養啓蒙書「玉川選書」をスタートさせ、さらに『フレーベル全集』『西洋の教育思想』や幼児・児童教育に関する叢書を相次いで世に送り出した。
　1982年には『大学教授法入門』を皮切りに、大学教育の現在・過去・未来を考える「高等教育シリーズ」の刊行を開始。大学史、大学論から、各国の教育事情や教授法、大学職員の教務実践法まで、高等教育のさまざまなテーマを扱っている。2010年から2011年にかけては、現在までの高等教育研究の成果を集大成し、次世代の研究・実践に継承する「リーディングス　日本の高等教育」を刊行した。
　また、幼稚部から大学院までをひとつのキャンパスに擁する玉川学園の出版部という特色を生かし、最近は『ともだち』などの絵本、『科学キャラクター図鑑』などの児童書を刊行。大学出版部のなかで唯一児童書を出す版元として、子どもと本の関係を考え、児童絵本、学習読物、教養図鑑を発信している。

History
Tamagawa University Press got its start in 1929 when Tamagawa Gakuen was founded, with “”Idea Shoin”” founded in 1923 as its predecessor. It has published works for readers across a broad array of age groups, from children’s books to university texts and technical books.
Tamagawa University Press is the only university press in Japan that has published numerous books related to elementary education, including books on children’s plays and song books. The University Press has published primarily books for children and higher education, reflecting the pride it has in its tradition of many years of publication related to education practice and theory, in addition to editing eight types of encyclopedia, including the “”Children’s Encyclopedia”” (30 volumes), which was Japan’s first encyclopedia for elementary school children, and the “”Tamagawa Encyclopedia”” (31 volumes) for adults. In addition to these publications, the University Press has also published books for the general public and has edited “”Zenjin”” (monthly), a periodical of Tamagawa Gakuen featuring interviews and reports on educational practices at Tamagawa Gakuen and University.
